PREP FOR FAUX TILE STENCILS
Before starting any stencil project research online How To Stencil onto Tile, Linoleum … etc. carefully watch any videos available.
SUPPLY LIST: Stencil brush or sponge roller (at least 2) for large projects/paper plates or paint pan/ painters tape/paint acrylic/Level/Damp Clean Cloth/Primer/Base Paint/Poly top coat.
#1. Clean your project area completely from dust and debris using a cleaning product prior to starting then let the area fully dry.
*WHEN stenciling over tile or linoleum you will need to apply a PRIMER 1st then a base paint.
#2. Tape over the outer edges of the stencil if you plan on using a roller!
Then run painter tape along a horizontal 1st row from the far Left of your space (floor or wall) to the far RIGHT while leveling the tape as you go to ensure your line is straight. Use the TILE GUIDES on the RIGHT side and BOTTOM of the Stencil to line up your tile while painting Horizontally or Vertically. Be sure to tape over floor boards and trim.
USING A STENCIL BRUSH OR SPONGE ROLLER:
USING A Stencil Brush: Pour a generous amount of paint into the center of a STURDY paper plate. Tap your stencil brush lightly into the paint. Tap off excess paint from your brush onto a empty plate or a clean paint rag to unload it.
If using a Sponge Roller: Pour a generous amount of paint into paint pan. Roll your roller lightly into the paint. Roll off the excess paint from your roller onto a clean paint rag or paper plate to unload the excess paint.
**LESS PAINT IS BEST. :) You can avoid “bleeding” paint under your stencil**
#5. When using a Stencil Brush: Lightly tap the loaded brush over the design. Start out light and repeat around the stencil until you get the desired look.
When using a Roller: Make sure you tape over any areas you don’t want painted onto your space. Roll the roller over the top of the design. Avoid pushing too hard over the design pushing the paint under the stencil as it will cause the paint to bleed under your stencil.
STENCILING POINTERS LETS GET STARTED!
IF YOU ARE STENCILING ONTO EXISTING TILES YOU DO NOT NEED TO USE THE TILE GUIDES MARKED WITH ARROWS <--- .
If you ordered TILE GUIDES and find you don’t need them just tape over them! TILE GUIDES are marked at the Bottom & R. side of your stencil with ARROWS.
ALL designs are centered to the stencil even those with the TILE GUIDES ADDED.
STENCILING OR PAINTING POINTERS:
Let the 1st stencil tile paint dry about 10 minutes.
Lift the stencil slowly from your project, lay the stencil over the painted TILE GUIDES from the previously painted area and line it up for the next Tile. This will help keep your project nice and straight along with the use of the painter tape line.
If you get “bleeding” under your stencil just use a little of the same background paint used on your project floor or walls to touch up the paint that bled outside your design or use a Q-tip to clean off existing tile. LET’S BEGIN!
#4. Stencil #1- Start in the far LEFT <- corner of the area. Tape the 4 corners of the stencil down to either floor, wall, tile with painters tape. Paint over the stencil then allow this to fully dry. Lay the stencil over the previously painted parts of the design to align Stencil #2 on the right side of the stencil by laying the stencil over the newly painted TILE GUIDES match it up to the design. Continue through the 1st row.
When the 1st row is completed move down the 2nd row and use the bottom of the stencils TILE GUIDE to start Stencil #1 of the 2nd row. Paint over the stencil allow to fully dry. Use the TILE GUIDE at the side of the stencil to continue until finished with the 2nd row.
To stencil the last row at the far RIGHT and at the very bottom of your room cut the stencil as needed.
Continue this process until your project is completed. Let paint dry and have 24 hours to fully cure.
*Don’t forget to seal your Floor & Walls with a clear poly top coat sealer to protect it!
We LOVE photos of completed projects so we have a monthly contest for DIY Stencil Winners to receive ANY STENCIL within our 2,000 stencil designs so email those pics!
